A suede jacket can be a fantastic investment, with effortless style and prolonged durability, it is an option many should consider adding to their wardrobe. Due to the pliable nature of suede, it conforms to the shape of the wearer, meaning the jacket looks great on whoever wears it.
Suede is animal hide that’s been sanded on the inner layer for a velvety, textured feel and appearance. Unfortunately, due to this process, it’s less durable than leather, more prone to staining, and above all harder to care for. There are, however, a few things you can do to keep your suede leather blazers and jackets in their best possible condition. How to Tackle Rain in Your Suede Jacket
A general rule of thumb is: on days where heavy rain, or even moderate for that matter, is forecasted, leave your suede jacket at home. But we realise this is easier said than done and especially during spring and autumn months, when the weather is famously changeable, this just isn’t a realistic expectation. That’s why we recommend applying water-repellant spray to your suede jacket as well as other items.
At the beginning of the process, spray in an inconspicuous area; this is in case the suede does not take well to the specific water repellant spray you’ve bought. If all is well, you can continue to apply the water repellant spray all over your suede jacket or blazer and then let it dry. What you will achieve by applying this spray is a greatly diminished effect of the water on the suede, reducing the chances of staining should it get wet. We would recommend reapplying the spray every season, and in the summer at your discretion.
Restore the Suede’s Nap with Regular Brushing
For those that might not know, the suede’s nap is the fine fibres you feel standing up on the surface of the suede. It’s what gives suede its distinctive texture. In order to maintain this feeling, regular brushing is a must. By getting yourself a good suede brush, we recommend one that has both brass wire and natural pig bristle, you can make sure you brush away dust and dirt.
We would also recommend brushing your suede after every use, however, we would also settle for a monthly suede brushing routine. Make sure to brush thoroughly across the surface, working in back-and-forth motions only, avoiding making circles or pushing the nap in different directions.
Worst Case Scenario: Your Suede Gets Wet and Stains
Now it is the worst-case scenario that you get caught in a substantial downpour, but should it happen we have some solutions. If your suede jacket does get wet, make sure to place it on a sturdy shaped hanger and allow it to dry naturally, do not try to speed up the process with artificial heat or even in sunlight.
Should your suede jacket stain, we have a few tips to get rid of them and restore your jacket. If the stain is dry, grab a pencil eraser and work it over the stain in small circular motions. Ensure you’re applying light pressure. Then brush the suede to restore the nap once the stain is gone.
If your suede dries with a watermark, you’ll want to treat it with white vinegar. Pour a little bit onto a clean, dry cloth, and rub the vinegar into the stained suede. You want to dampen the suede, not soak it. Let the suede air dry, and then brush the spot to remove any lingering marks.
